Choosing a mattress

Choosing a mattress

The bedroom is all about comfort. You could pick a wonderful colour scheme, superb furniture and top quality furnishings, but in the end your comfort will be decided by the mattress you pick.

This is certainly not a decision to rush and you literally need to try out the different options available. There are a range of mattresses to choose between, with varying prices, and different levels of comfort with each.

When it comes to selecting a mattress, ensure to test out the product first-hand. This simply means going into a bedroom store and sprawling out to see how it feels. This is the only true way of finding the right mattress for you.

There are three main mattress types available and most manufacturers will be able to make more than one type. So have a read through the different options and start your journey to purchasing the ideal mattress for your bedroom.

Pocket sprung mattress
With pocket sprung mattresses the springs are sewn into individual fabric pockets which provide good support for your body. This is because each coil is designed to absorb weight, helping those who prefer to sleep on their side. If you tend to be a fidget your partner will be less likely to feel you moving around too.

Which? research shows that pocket sprung mattresses tend to be the most popular type amongst homeowners. More than 50% of those surveyed said they owned a pocket sprung mattress.

Memory foam mattress

Memory foam mattresses are often seen as a luxury and the design features a layer of temperature sensitive material, known as the memory foam. These mattresses absorb your weight and help to support your whole body, maintaining the
position you lie in.

There are different types of memory foam mattresses available, varying in quality. Some mattresses will be made entirely of memory foam, helping you get a better night’s sleep, whilst others will have half memory foam and half springs.

Continuous coil mattress

Coil mattresses tend to be at the lower end of the price scale and are made from single looped wire. The springs will all move in unison, so you’re more likely to be disturbed when a partner moves around at night. Coil mattresses won’t provide the same level of support as other designs and can wear quickly.
Which? research shows that those with coil mattresses don’t get as good a night’s sleep as those without them.

Mattress toppers

Mattress toppers can be purchased with the mattress and add a memory foam layer to the top. It’s effectively extra padding. However, be aware because sometimes memory foam toppers can cost as much as a new mattress and won’t add more support if your mattress is already sagging.
